I practiced law in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for over 30 years with a focus on small business, corporate, real estate, condominium and franchise law. I also developed and managed many commercial and residential properties; owned and operated a major hotel; developed and operated a non-equity country club; developed condominiums, and built single-family homes.

More recently, I have served as CFO of a lighting supply company, developed and operated a meat business producing sausages, and co-owned and operated an employment/staffing business.

My SF SCORE counseling is thus as broad and varied as my business and legal experience permits. I am a problem solver who likes nothing better than to figure a way out of a dilemma. I am particularly pleased when a client says, before the end of the hour, you answered all of my questions and I understand what I have to do. I counsel face-to-face and via email and phone.

Location is everything, as they say in the world of business. Whether your company provides services, sells products or receives clients, your commercial property--even if it’s simply a desk, a watercolor painting and a plant--is where you draw your inspiration and energy, in addition to being a crucial first impression for customers. To guarantee the kind of solid tenant/landlord relationship that allows your business to thrive, you’ll want to start things off on the right foot with an airtight commercial real estate lease.

If you own a business, there’s a good chance it’s one of your most valuable assets--if not the most valuable. Not just a major source of income, your business is also the culmination of a dream and in some cases the livelihood of others. For this reason, it makes good sense to put together a business estate plan that covers your company’s assets, trade secrets and organizational structure so that forces beyond your control don’t slow it down.

Special tax law provisions may help taxpayers and businesses recover financially from the impact of a disaster, especially when the federal government declares their location to be a major disaster area. Depending on the circumstances, the IRS may grant additional time to file returns and pay taxes. Both individuals and businesses in a federally declared disaster area can get a faster refund by claiming losses related to the disaster on the tax return for the previous year, usually by filing an amended return.

The IRS also offers audio presentations on Planning for Disaster. These presentations discuss business continuity planning, insurance coverage, recording keeping and other tips to stay in business after a major disaster.
