High Tech and Service at Ambrosia’s Automotive

Once in a great while, the people the business and the opportunity align to produce a sure winner. Ambrosia’s Automotive is a good example.

Ryan Ambrosia is a unique combination of expert auto technician and computer nut, a graduate of the automotive program at Whitmer High, and the computer/business program at Davis Business College. The auto repair business was all about computer diagnostics, so Ryan was a perfect fit.

In the summer of 2014, Ryan was working at an automotive shop whose owner had promised to sell the business to him. Suddenly, the deal fell apart.  To make a long story short, by December Ryan and his wife Jo-Marie had arranged to purchase a different shop, and Ambrosia’s Automotive opened on Alexis Road at the corner of Rambo Lane.

Ryan gives a lot of credit to his SCORE mentor, Mike Messmer.  “He’s awesome,” Ryan says of Mike.  “But he was a slave driver; he made me know the numbers, and gave me homework to be sure I learned what I needed to know to run a successful business.”

Mike Messmer returns the compliments.  “Ryan innately understands business,” says Mike, and “he’s a real winner.”  Mike and Ryan continue to meet regularly, as the business grows and demand for Ambrosia’s style of automotive service increases.

Jo-Marie is the perfect front-office customer-contact person (though she was camera shy and refused to have her picture taken)!  As Ryan says, “She listens to what they are looking for; you’re the most important person in our life right now.”  When you visit, you see Jo juggling new customer inquiries along with orders and paperwork and a constantly ringing telephone.

In two years, Ryan and Jo have built a successful business in a very competitive environment.  They do it “the old-fashioned way” with honesty, fair pricing, and personal attention.  They have established a network of other automotive service providers, sending customers where they receive the best value for their needs without inflating their charges.

At home, there are three young Ambrosias, ages 3, 5, and 7, with a helpful grandmother to fill in as needed.  At the shop, in addition to Ryan and Jo there are two mechanics that are part of the “family,” and Ryan hopes to add to that family soon. The shop feels something like a community center, with people streaming in and out.  It’s a reflection of the personality and warmth that Ryan and Jo bring to their enterprise.
